What Are Custom Carbon Vanes?

Custom carbon vanes are precision-machined carbon or graphite sliding components manufactured to an approved application-specific specification rather than selected only from a standard catalog size.

Depending on the project, the material, dimensions, edge geometry, grooves, holes, profiles, orientation, marking, or packaging may be customized. Custom manufacturing still requires verification of the pump/compressor identification, rotor-slot information, material, speed, vacuum/pressure, and environment.

How Do Carbon Vanes Work?

  1. The rotor rotates eccentrically within the cylinder.
  2. Vanes move radially inside the rotor slots.
  3. Vane tips maintain the designed contact relationship with the running surface.
  4. Vanes divide the chamber into separate volumes.
  5. Chamber volume changes during rotation.
  6. Gas is moved to create vacuum or positive pressure depending on machine design.

Vanes perform sliding, sealing, chamber separation, radial movement, and wear compensation.

Where Are Custom Carbon Vanes Used?

Carbon and graphite vanes are commonly associated with many dry-running and oil-free rotary vane systems because suitable materials can provide dry sliding / self-lubricating behavior. However, not every rotary vane pump or compressor uses carbon vanes.

Critical Rule: Dry-Running vs Oil-Lubricated

Original vane material and pump lubrication design must be verified before a custom carbon vane is specified.

  • Dry / Oil-Free Systems: Carbon or graphite may be appropriate. Continue technical review of dimensions and operating parameters.
  • Oil-Lubricated Systems: Oil-lubricated machines may use carbon composite, fiber composite, phenolic, polymer, metal, or other manufacturer-specific materials. Do not automatically assume carbon compatibility.

Material Options & Verification

Broad material family and exact grade are separate decisions. CARBOLVE evaluates verified material options, including:

Note: Non-CARBOLVE comparison materials (like fiber composite, resin composite, metal, polymer) may exist in the market but are not assumed as CARBOLVE supply items unless verified.

Standard vs Custom

Standard: Existing specification, dimensions, and material. Starts from a catalog or part number.

Custom: Project-specific specification. Dimensions, material, and edge geometry can be modified where feasible. Starts from drawing/sample.

Custom does not automatically mean better. Use an existing approved product when it satisfies the application.

Custom: Defines or modifies a specification.

Projects may overlap. An obsolete replacement project may become a custom project after a new CARBOLVE specification is approved.

OEM vs Custom Aftermarket

OEM: Original equipment manufacturer specification.

Custom Aftermarket: Manufactured by another supplier according to a separately verified specification.

Do not claim "exact equivalent" or "OEM approved" without verified evidence. Materials and testing routes differ.

Dimension terminology varies by pump manufacturer. Include an annotated sketch so CARBOLVE can confirm the measurement orientation.

  • L = Length: Manufactured according to drawing or approved spec.
  • H or W = Height / Width: Custom according to drawing or verified original specification.
  • T = Thickness: Critical for rotor-slot fit.

Edge geometry may affect installation, running-in, contact, mechanical stress, and slot movement. Follow an approved drawing or verified original geometry rather than applying a generic edge design.

System Requirements for Custom Vanes

Rotor-Slot Fit

The vane must move freely in the rotor slot. Do not publish one universal clearance.

  • Too tight: Sticking, heat, binding, breakage.
  • Too loose: Tilting, impact, leakage, instability.

Request: Slot width, depth, rotor diameter, slot condition, operating temp.

Rotor Information

CARBOLVE manufactures vane components and does not manufacture the rotor unless verified. However, rotor data is critical for vane development.

Request: Rotor diameter, number of slots, slot angle, rotation direction, material, existing wear, deposits.

Cylinder / Stator Surface

"A custom carbon vane cannot compensate for a severely damaged rotor, slot, cylinder, or stator surface."

Check for: Scoring, scratches, grooves, deposits, pitting, corrosion, foreign particles, heat damage.

What a Worn Sample May Not Reveal

A worn carbon vane is useful for reverse identification, but it is not always a complete engineering specification.

  • Original Height: Often unknown once worn.
  • Exact Material Grade: Cannot be reliably identified by color or appearance alone.
  • Original Tolerances: Lost to wear.
  • Original Edge: May be worn flat or chipped.
  • Operating Limits: Maximum RPM, pressure, and OEM validation requirements are not visible on the part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CARBOLVE reproduce a worn carbon vane?
A worn vane is useful for geometry and wear assessment, but it may not reveal the original unworn height, exact material grade, original tolerances, approved wear limit, or complete operating specification. Equipment information should also be supplied.
Can CARBOLVE manufacture carbon vanes from dimensions only?
Dimensions can be used to begin a manufacturing review, but they may not define the complete vane specification. Material, edge geometry, pump type, rotor-slot fit, speed, vacuum or pressure, operating environment, and existing vane information may also be required.
Can vane material be identified by color?
No. Visual appearance may suggest a broad material family, but it cannot reliably identify the exact graphite or carbon grade, treatment, composite structure, mechanical properties, or operating capability.
Can a carbon vane replace a fiber vane?
Not automatically. Carbon/graphite and fiber-composite vanes have different mechanical, frictional, thermal, moisture, and lubrication behavior. Material substitution should only follow a review of the equipment design, original material, geometry, and operating conditions.
Do all rotary vane vacuum pumps use carbon vanes?
No. Many dry-running rotary vane pumps use carbon or graphite vanes, but other rotary vane pumps may use fiber composites, polymers, metals, or other machine-specific vane materials.
